In light of the state of our economy I have decided to become a more frugal grocery shopper. Now this may come as a surprise to most of you but I normally 1)plan my meals for the week ahead of time(surprise) and then I 2)go to the grocery store one time only(surprise) and spend what I need in order to get my 2 goals accomplished (surprise).
So in attempts to save on our grocery bill but still keep us healthy I went to the library and checked out as many healthy frugal cookbooks as I could manage to carry. I started w/ Jessica S. cookbook "Deceptively ** Delicious". I scanned through it and made my weekly meal plan and included all the vegetables/fruits for the purees I needed to now make.
So ok... this did not save me any money on that weeks budget. Nor time nor energy.
I spent 1 day, 1 whole day people. Steaming, baking, mashing, pureeing, bagging and labeling. Not to mention washing my supplies in between each fruit/vegetable. Here is my list.
Sweet potatoes
Cauliflower
Bananas
Squash
Broccoli
Avocado
Carrots
It was so much work and I was exhausted, yet EXtremely proud of my home-making self.
But guess what. It does save us money in the long run. plus time and energy. Because I now have so much food already frozen. It was a trial run for me, to see if I could do a week of frozen home made meals ahead of time by myself. I now have the confidence to try. Think Girlfriends K*itchen or Simple S**uppers, only at home.
SO at this point I became super excited, guess why????
Here is the best part MY KIDS LOVED EVERY SINGLE RECIPE!!! And the meals were all extremely healthy!!! And they never knew there was the "good stuff" in them. For example, we had chocolate fondue w/avocado in it and we couldn't even taste. It was awesome.
This is not a plug for the cookbook although I do plan on buying it.
If you thought this post was hilarious, wait till you read part 2 it gets better, or worse, depending on your views.
